The pandemic: Training and development needs in the life sciences and health technologies sector

Aviseo conducted a survey for Montréal InVivo of life sciences and health technology organizations (LSHT) to determine the impact of the pandemic and contribute to economic recovery aligned with the needs of the workforce. Despite the economic downturn, most organizations were looking to hire and provide training or development opportunities over the next 12 to 24 months. Data analysis and management, as well as computerization of certain aspects of work are skills to be developed by workers and avenues for economic recovery for LSHT organizations.

Key figures

  • Of the LSHT organizations, 46% are currently experiencing negative growth, compared to only 4% before the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • Of the LSHT organizations, 62% maintained their training budget, 20% decreased it, and 18% increased it.
  • While labour needs decreased for 9% of respondents, 88% feel that they are somewhat or very likely to hire over the next 24 months.
  • The two most important types of skills to develop or that are needed are scientific (48% of respondents) and technological (37% of respondents) skills.
  • Of the organizations, 45% do not plan to offer training or development opportunities in the next three months, and 80% do not plan to in the next 12 months.
  • Only 20% have used the concerted action program for maintaining employment (PACME) since the onset of the pandemic, despite economic downturns.
